Yo.
Cool. Glad to hear you've started working again. Too bad I can't say the same for the Squishmeister. Wink

It is indeed, but don't cook too much, as Cardweaver may take umbrage. Wink

Crys: Are you sticking to the original plans for Ice Metal, or have you new ideas for direction after your hiatus?

Well I'm planing on drawing a new tile set for one area. I just don't have any good idea on how to draw it. :/
I'm trying a few ideas and we will see how that goes.

Right well. Some of you might wonder what happened but most of you most likely don't give a shit because you think I won't get this done.
So let's get this over with.

I said I was getting back into hacking in my last few posts. And while that holds true I could not get the energy to hack SM but kept making levels for "that other game that is so much easier to hack" SMW.

It would be hard to explain if not so.
Here is the cut out map showing what I want to do:

Here is a map of every room I have done so far:

At the first look it may look like I don't have much left. That's not the case.

In order to get to kraids area you need supers ATM. (looking at door colors alone) But the plan is for you to walk from the cave up there.

But wait Crys, you got parts done after the cave but almost nothing done at the cave?
To be honest yes. The idea with the cave is to have one big area with lot's of paths and much exploring and many items to find. (Kinda like a mix of metroid/MZM brinstar.)
Problem is I can't make my self to do this area for quite a few reasons.
1. Lot's of door repointing. While it's not hard for me to do it at all it takes time and is boring.
2. The GFX I did draw for this area is horrible and I suck at drawing stone.
3. I'm using WS as base and it's hard to find good rooms to use.

Honestly, I would love to put up a demo I really do. But considering the middle part of the game is missing that is not possible.

But for a minute let's forget about the game and look at other areas I could do.
1. There is Ice. Now the only problem is I want to draw my own style for this area. It's just that I suck at drawing any thing snow/ice related. ;'(
2. There is ridley's lair. There is only one thing that stops me from doing this. As I do rooms on the fly I place items in the rooms that got PML's. And I really need to know around what type and number of items you have when you get to this area.
3. The core. This would be the last area of the game and I do have some samples of GFX ideas as shown in one of my trailers. Problem is I want to make the Ice area first to see how many rooms I have to work with when making this. (As the Ice area will use the most rooms then any other area)

You might say that this is BS. But they are mentally blocking me from doing it.

I might just scrap the cave area. But then I need some thing to replace it.
So I might as well throw it out. What would you like to see in Ice metal redux?

I got so much done and I will get the rest done too. It's just a question about time and interest.
I normal get interested for this project from time to time and then make lot's of stuff. (Heck I made the whole steamfair area and tile set last time which where after the summer was over)

I know most of you think I'm a bit of a fag and retarded and most likely given up all hope for this project (I don't blame you) This post is more a bit of an update for myself I guess....
hey relax crys im still working on my hack too...at least your hack is going kinda well.
me i start from scratch almost everytime because of patches and new ideas.....
plus im trying to learn asm too....but good work so far man!
Crys: your cave problems...
you say you're having trouble using wrecked ship rooms as a base? why not just- Fill the rooms with empty space and just make completely new rooms? It will be a bit more time consuming, but as long as you have some ideas, you'll have your cave going in no time.  Wink

also, if your having problems with drawing graphics, I suggest-
1. Just keep trying.
2. Rip ice from elsewhere. It's very hard to draw tiles for ice. I know this because I've tried too, thus why I ripped SMAS tiles.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I also wouldn't worry about losing motivation from time to time, as I'm sure all hackers get that problem.  I can't even remember how long Drewseph was hacking Redesign in the end (I know it was years), but I have no doubt that he had moments where he could have just dropped the entire project.  As it was he scrapped it a few times before the final version.
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
Crys please don't give up on this. IM looks awesome. You just need some motivation for it. If you're going to scrap the cave area, you should stick to some kind of theme (like you already have). You've got fire, ice, whatever the forest could be called, maybe an earth (well, cave anyway), why not something supernatural like a shrine or something? Maybe old ruins? (honestly I'm thinking of Zelda Ocarina Of Time right now XD) You could have one big area joining all the lttile areas like in Zelda, with the big area just being plain boring grassland or something. And all the themed areas around it.

And I don't think you're a fag or retarded, but I do think your Pokemon thing in your signature has gone back into a ball for some odd reason...  And I gave it a candy thing :D

(I know I don't quote and comment on what you guys say to often but I do read it and take it all in account.)

Right let's move on, this screen shot screams beta right of the batch but what ever:

I got the idea of this crystal design a while back but I did not have an area that they would fit in so I kinda ignored it. But now that I scraped the cave area and I don't got much ideas I guess I will design the area around the crystals. I made two models one with a sorta glow around it and one with out. Both got a dark outline that you can't see. I made one with layer 1 + 2 big glow but it looked so damn bad I scraped it right away.

So I kinda started making this ground. The idea is after lemmings (The first one) in a way. I sorta recalled the design (that I did copy with the yellow/gold line) in a much larger scale on one level. And I kinda though I could make some sort of dark/gold temple with it.
I have no idea for name for this area yet so I guess I'm open for suggestions.

And the tiles will be re-designed later to a much more bigger palette scale and with a more though trough design in general, once I get so far. (One of the reasons I don't post this in the screenshot/video topic)
That reminds me of bowser's castle on yoshi's island. I don't know why. :x
and the yellow circles make me think of rinkas.
It looks interesting, and very original. I'd say keep working on it as planned.
Go ahead. Stare.
It sort of looks like curtains for the floor/ceiling... Stage fright? Too big, and lame. If you put Phantoon in that area you could call it the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull... I'm not helping am I?
...
Hmmm, it reminds me of the Ridley's Hideout area in the original Metroid.  Maybe you should add some Lower Norfair enemies.

You scrapped the...  For....?  aiwebs_016

Nevermind.  I wouldn't want to discourage you.  Embarassed

Something Castle related, or if Crystals are supposed to be the theme...

Ooh!  I got it!  Crystal CastleVery Happy

Edit: Not to be confused with the old arcade game with the gem hoarding Bentley Bear.

Edit2: The crystals look sad.  Make them look happy....  Or is that what Samus is there to fix?

Aw.  Here I go again.  Rambling.  Now my post doesn't look as serious.  Mark my werdz, ths is srs bzns! >:-D
Green-Kirby, ROAR!
Fixed up palette and design in some cases.
Crystals now also come in two sorts of metal gold and bronze.

Still looks a bit betaish due to the fact that I messed up the design on the "dirt" tiles in one way.

Great name idea Gaius I think I will use it. Seeing as it matches the phun on all my other areas.
*goes and edits first post*

I hope thats no-where near you're final scenery GFX....
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Those things remind me of sad robots, with sunken shoulders.

Regarding the general look, the yellow stripe along the purple edges just stands out way too much, in my opinion.
It does put me in mind of drapes....

As for the crystals...  I don't think the fuzzy looking "glow" on the outer edges looks right.  If you had a way of making a semi-transparent "glow" effect -that could work.  Unless you already said you tried that.

I did have the thought...  What about ripping some graphics from one of the Donkey Kong Country games?  One of them has some diamond mine levels...  Or if you can get your hands on a game called Toki...  There is one level...  Crystals galore!  I think it's actually an ice cave.  Ooh!  Ice Metal...  Ice Crystal...  Where does it end?  laugh new
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
I tried ripping the ice crystals from Donkey Kong Country 2 once a while back. It didn't turn out too well though, because of the difference in perspective. It's still side-scrolling, but donkey kong has a lot more 3D-ness with the way the areas are drawn. Didn't look any good in Super Metroid.

Major update.

I drooped my last tile set idea. But don't worry I'm sure you will like the replace meant instead.

This is not drawn by me. And to be honest it do not match my style that well... But it matches the theme of my hack and it did not hit me until I saw it. It's drawn by "Broozer" who is a very well respected 16bit GFX artist. He is into SMW hacking and did decide to release one of his tilesets public. Granted it was not made for SM but it's very easy to use.

Here is some screen of it in action. I will now start working on the area! yay progress! ^o^ (I will have a pic with the BG up as soon as I'm done maping it out.)

Thats not the end of the good news. I had some problems drawing the tileset for "ice" in case you did not notice. But let's say I did take care of that problem, one way or another. :)
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't think the bright green looks very good in large patches, such as ground fill. I would recommend darkening it a bit or using the purple stuff for most of that.

Also, the skull in the second pic is very reminiscent of Wario Land 2.
Go ahead. Stare.
Yay! Some more progress! I don't care what you are doing as long as you are able to work on this.

I sort of like the green, especially with the suit. I think you could use the skull more often though, I mean, only one skull in three pics? Lame. And, could you get rid of that bridge tile in the first pic? It looks... Out of place.
Green-Kirby, ROAR!
uNsane. I will end up darkening the ground a bit... But trust me it will look much better when I get a BG and fix up the CRE palette.

MetroidMst: More skulls? Sure you will be happy when running past this area when you play this hack! laugh new
And yeah I got ride of that tile!

Anyway, I still got free space in the tileset after inserting Broozer's tiles. Any suggestions on how to fill it up?

And...
I'm happy to see that some people are still interested. Looking back I over hyped this a lot considering how damn slow I work.
Go ahead. Stare.
I would suggest putting more plants or ground level stuff in because it seems pretty bare there, and I only see a vine in one picture, so maybe something of that sort. Perhaps something to go with the vines on the bridge tiles would work, perhaps with a flower bloom somewhere for extra visual effect.

I can't wait for more skulls!
