A lot of enemies do damage just by coming into contact, so how will that work when it's enemy vs enemy? Imagine for example a kihunter against a sidehopper... it would be stupid to just have them run into each other until they die.
Players could choose what enemies they wanted to be... If they want to do a stupid combination, that would be their choice.  Personally, I will stick with Eticoon -vs- Dachora.

Quote from SleepingSeaweed:
When I saw this I came to think one of your (Jathys) patches that would make the screen follow an enemy instead of Samus. So I was thinking... how about making single player arenas where the player controls an enemy to fight against other enemies? Since there would be no second player involved scrolling wouldn't be an issue (or would it?) so bigger arenas could be made.
2 player has been a strange goal for a while, so that explains that.  As for the 1 player enemy arenas... Probably won't happen, as this is a side project.  To program one enemy to harm another enemy isn't all that difficult.  To program all the other enemies to harm one particular enemy though... Not to say I don't have plans for doing that, but definitely not in this project.

Whats with camera issues, I think a big problem here. it is very ugly and less fruitfull to do by hacking what you are intending to realize, I suppose.

Other than that, just to make you happy there will be unlockable mini games in SM2 like more modern M1-remake with a tournament/arena-mode. I will probably provide it to the fans much earlier before SM2 is finished so that you have already fun.

Another SM2 post in an unrelated thread....

Anyways, this looks pretty cool.  I've never used Netplay before on my ZSNES, but this surely looks like a fun game to play.

It's a hit the nail on the topic post. Just read it in whole, funny dude.

Can't look cool before you've even seen it.  The first few beta releases will be extremely simplistic and limited.  It'll get more advanced as it gets developed, but that depends on how much time I can devote to it . . . It could fizzle out after one or two unsatisfying betas or it could become my #1 project (doubt it).

J-SNAKE:  Camera issues aren't issues until rooms larger than 1x1 are supported.  Since that'd be a while, there's a while to figure the best way to deal with them (I actually already have a few thoughts).

It is already one, lol. Ok, if you have fun to do so then go on.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
J-SNAKE, he clearly said that it's not an issue, as the 'maps' would only be one screen, so everything would be visible at once.  Only if (when) larger maps are supported would it become an issue.

What I want to say is that exactly things like these are resulting directly from camera-handling-problems. Using only one static screen-view(easier to realize) means the map-becomes less use for combat. Instead it equals more a beatm up like street-fighter.
It means to make it interesting and not shallow you will now have to consider a combat-system including abilities like blocking, a counter-system and so on. Just think ahead.
I am thinking ahead, but there is only so much depth needed in a side project.

Holy.
Thats amazing.
I would most definitly play this.
Super metroid has to be my favorite metroid game :O
I have always thought of some kind of multiplayer mod that justs adds extra samus'.
Man if Co Op was possible Super metroid would be the greatest game of all time.
Well good luck on this Jathy , Hope it works.
EDIT:I messed up there I mean it is the greatest game of all time...
I love the Arena idea and stuff. Is it possible to have more than two players?

It would be the greatest game of all time?  Hmmmm..... Some people would beg to differ that it already is.  Anyway, I hope to be testing some very basic controller 2 through netplay on Friday, so...

As the SNES allowed more than 2 controllers, it would *technically* be possible, though no one will *ever* do it.  To the best of my knowledge, the game's engine is only coded to read input from 2 controllers (controller 2 was included because of debug mode, thankfully).  I'd have no idea how to force the engine to identify more than just those two... Believe me, I've tried figuring out how in hell to get the Super Scope to work (zsnes allows your mouse to move the target around), but didn't even know where to start on that.

Okay, here's the deal:
1) I made a proof-of-concept hack for testing purposes (didn't want any of my other hacks' coding out just yet).  Enables debug mode automatically so controller 2 can be read from.  Made the blue-face-rock enemy respond to controller 2.
2) Tested this using keyboard and a game controller . . . It works.
3) Tried connecting through netplay to test it many times without being able to connect.
4) Finally got a chance to connect with someone who is actually comfortable with netplay (Kejardon) and tested it out.

[glow=red,2,300]If you know what you're doing in netplay and want to try it out:[/glow]
1) http://jathys.zophar.net/files/twoplay.ips is the patch (headerless rom)
2) Keep in mind that this is nothing more than proof-of-concept... Very basic.
3) Debug mode is enabled automatically... just try to avoid those features, okay?
4) Start the game and drop to the floor... your path is kind of obvious.
5) Player 2 is a rock... You're in the tube (2nd room) and have to go up to see yourself (you do respawn).
6) Left/Right/Up/Down -only- for player 2.  This was designed in about 15 minutes, so no griping laugh new
make it so you can't go through the other players, even when flickering.

Meaning, when flickering you can't get damaged but you can't pass through them. You could still jump over them I guess.
