Super Metroid: A More Differenter Zebes is a half (maybe even mini since it's so short) hack that I've been working on the last couple of weeks after using smile for the first time. So no, there aren't any interesting asm changes, it's really just route and palettes. Have you ever noticed how red the original game was? Speaking of routes, there are three of them. You choose within the first, probably 5 minutes which path you take, affecting items that can be collected, bosses that can be fought, areas reached etc. Two of the paths are very similar and one is somewhat shorter than the rest.
-Rough percentages of the three are 65%, 53%, and 66% (margin of error probably 1-2%, maybe people could post full completions?) (turns out they were downright wrong) -It's for headered. -The only part that I'm not satisfied with is a maridia palette, you'll probably know it when you see it. As far as I can tell it isn't editable in smile.
Note: this was not meant to be hard, maybe only a little more so than the original game. The skills required are very light since most of the rooms were left the same. I think there is a single mockball and a single ibj (that isn't even required) depending on the route. There may be one tricky wall jump. The only tester was myself, I don't think there are any major errors.
Disclaimer: You should probably use save states if you aren't being careful with ammo. Since design decisions went along the lines of "Did i get stuck?" and if I did, "What's the smallest fix I can make?" There are probably plenty of areas to get stuck in until you pick up a morph ball and it's very easy to run out of pbs and get stuck between walls. Most bosses remain unchanged as well. At this time I don't have any original ideas for them and the last thing I wanted to make was some sort of super endurance test. The bosses that have changed are all optional.
It was very red...(hope the palettes aren't scarring)
Edit: Version 1.3 (Fixes: Alternate entrance to Maridia fixed?)
Known issue: Can get stuck in maridia without morphball, can get yourself stuck if you don't bring enough ammo

Ok, I Took the route that cuts down East Brinstar and West Maridia and heads to Norfair. I am out of Norfair after collecting Speed Boost. What do I do now?

You missed at least a couple, but you don't need them to continue.

I have an idea of what you're trying to do, either go back for some e-tanks and reserves or try something else I think you're trying to move through the lava to GT

I'm enjoying the hack but I think I'm stuck. I went with missiles first, down to Red Brinstar for supers, then to Maridia for morph/gravity/speedboost/bombs/plasma. Then I went through WS, beat Phantoon, grabbed grapple, and went across to Green Brinstar, where I got early X-Ray, which was awesome. Problem is, I then went to Norfair and SB'd to get charge beam without spring ball. Did I screw myself up? Because I've been all over everywhere since then and I've only found ice beam. I need power bombs to get to Ridley/Kraid, but I just cannot find them. Help!

I played, and so far just beat Draygon. I definitely SBed though, as I got the Gravity in Maridia (took missles, then supers in red brinstar, then to maridia), then got the speedbooster in Norfair. Collected whatever I could find there, then could not find a way back into Maridia for the longest time because I was missing bombs. I eventually pulled off a ridiculously short shinespark to get through a bomb block, and made my way up through Maridia.
I'm a bit confused as to what the other routes are. I saw the gauntlet door, but got tired of trying to WJ back up there after I fell off. Then theres the route I took, but whats the third one?

I got stuck here.edit: There are probably plenty of areas to get stuck in... Eh, nevermind. *deletes screen shot* I have to say... It's like a hack explosion as of late. :P edit2: I was this close | | to making a topic in the 'board walk' about AVG running a virus scan and playing with snes9x, particularly Super Metroid games/hacks... and usually getting an error message... Well, this time my monitor went black and the sound of Samus getting hit (repeatedly and rapidly) was all I could hear. I had to power off my computer. I'm not saying this has anything to do with your hack... I had 2nd thoughts about making that topic since it's not a good idea anyway to be running an emulator while another app is scanning your system. :p Sorry for going off-topic. I think I cheated. Glitching through the tube, but I didn't get very far. I tried to go where the spring ball usually is. I don't know if I need the grapple beam yet, -I didn't make it that far.... That's when my computer farted out. :-?

Acheron: I was hoping no one could SB that without slowdown. Curious what you did, but a more thorough exploration of Crateria should show you where you need to go. Spoiler if you don't feel like looking: Cardweaver: Ummm yeah that's an unintentional SB, you weren't supposed to leave maridia that way, I think I know where I messed up and how you got out, I'll try to fix that. The other path that so far I don't think anyone has seen: Gaius: Wait, you can glitch through the maridia tube? I had no idea... If you took a route that didn't give you gravity I wouldn't suggest going through maridia.

Yep, I gots gravity. :P Others might know about this but just in case... ;-) The glitch through the tube is where, when on top of the tube, you roll up in to a ball, get yourself underneath the rock, then stand up. You should fall down/inside the tube. It might take a couple tries, but anyone can do it.

Spoiler if you don't feel like looking: Dude, it may have been the hardest SB I've ever done. I used a combination of ridiculously precise bomb-jumping and wall-jumping that still took me a good 5-10 minutes of attempts to pull off. The only way I can think of to force Spring Ball as necessary is a rising-lava trap--make a long, convoluted springball path that would take far too long to get through without it before lava/acid rises up and kills you.

I took the route most seem to have to, RB missiles and supers and then go to maridia for gravity and so forth. I got charge early too, the first crumbleblock could be passed by morphballing onto the block then waiting to just before you hit the ground and unmorph and make a crouchjump, this will get you past the block while it is reappearing. Can't find PB's though, I don't know what you mean with going to statues but I can't get back to crateria at least. Also I don't have ice and don't know where it is. The only way I can think of to force Spring Ball as necessary is a rising-lava trap--make a long, convoluted springball path that would take far too long to get through without it before lava/acid rises up and kills you. Or by having a pre gravity area underwater with a 2 block high jump, that way you can't get out of crouch position to do a normal jump and bombs won't work. This is how Saturn postponed plasma collection in SMI. Oh by the way, very very good hack so far, a little to blue though...

Man, freakin' statue room. Whatev. Good hack. 2:02, 66%. Might run through another path sometime. I like what you did! Most fun of the minor hacks I've played (minor in that it's still Zebes).
